Chapter 2059: END

Shin Youngwoo was an unlucky loser in life. He entered into debt to buy the gaming capsule needed to play the game Satisfy. He experienced a hard life and was forced into manual labor jobs to pay off the enormous debt, but he still played the game despite not being good at it.

His in-game character called Grid found unusual luck in a legendary class change item (Pagma’s Rare Book) during an S-class quest. But hidden beneath that luck was his level dropping to -1. He struggled to survive and made money in the world of Satisfy as the first negative leveled legendary class player.

Through effort and hard work he slowly rose from the bottom of the barrel to the top. He gained new comrades (player and NPC alike) with his charm, items, and dignity stat. He continues to create the ultimate items for himself and fights as a successor of Pagma, a legendary blacksmith and swordsman. In the meantime, he is no longer in Pagma’s shadow, is on his way to mastering Control, and writes his own epics.

Introduction

Overgeared (템빨, Temppal, lit. Item Effect) is a popular ongoing Korean fantasy VRMMORPG Light Novel series written by Park Saenal (박새날). It is currently being serialized on Kakaopage under the original publisher Maya & Maru.

The English Version is being serialized on the Wuxiaworld by the official English publisher Wuxiaworld, and is currently being translated by the translator Rainbow Turtle.

The Original Version contains 66 complete volumes and over 1421 chapters, while the 67th volume is in the process of being published completely.

The Novel Covers and other novel related illustrations have been illustrated by the artists Silverbin and Haban. Meanwhile, the English Version started being published on Wuxiaworld in October 16, 2017 by the translator Rainbow Turtle, and contains over 1400 non-VIP chapters.

Novel Setting

The timeline of the novel is set in the future earth, and the basis of this novel is a virtual reality game called Satisfy—developed by the world’s top genius scientist Lim Cheolho and some of the other world-class scientists. The economic impact of Satisfy on the Global Economy is pretty great—as normally presented in most of the VRMMORPG novels.

The main character is initially timid, flaky, selfish, only cares about money, and easily feels jealous of others. But as the main character encounters various people and geniuses, he internally matures and his personality changes. If the main character is described as cancerous early on, at present he can be called a mature adult.

Like other novels, it contains a munchkin element, but it is different from typical munchkins. In the early stages, the game progresses with the main character using his class of a Legendary Blacksmith.

The main character expands the game content and the level of the existing users dramatically increase. Hidden talents, new players in the Official Rankings, classes that could break the balance, all of this makes the main character’s one-man show impossible.

The main character grows internally and externally while competing with others. In fact, if you compare the simple and ignorant battle method in the beginning to his abilities in the present time, it is possible to feel such a sense of distance that he doesn’t seem like the same character. And the journey continues….

Reception

As for the evaluation of the work, the criticism was severe in the beginning, but the popularity increased rapidly after that. The basic settings and story line are similar to other VR novels. The early parts aren’t much different from rival novels.

The main character is initially timid, flaky, selfish, only cares about money and easily feels jealous of others. Because the author set up the character in this way, the story was difficult for the readers to read.

However, the praiseworthy thing is the development of content and the main character. Along with the passage of time, the novel rating has exceeded the market average in recent years due to the author’s growth.

The improvement in the author’s writing and the growth of the main character led to rapid changes in the comments.

However, the main character’s selfish and frustrating behavior caused many readers to stop reading in the beginning. Those who don’t read beyond the early parts of the 5th volume (~ chapter 90) find it hard to believe. However, for the readers who have gone beyond the beginning, it is a tragedy that seems really pitiful.

Currently, its popularity is increasing and a new webtoon (2020) was recently released. There is also the old webtoon which was stopped being serialized due to certain reasons.

Additionally, for the old webtoon, there are many criticisms due to the various changes made because of which the story greatly deviated from its Light Novel counterpart.
